The Okavango Delta reveals itself here from a fisherman's camp, at the dusk that follows a rainy-season storm. A lantern set on a wooden crate casts an amber glow over the ochre ground, while the tea-brown river water reflects a cold grey blue falling from an overcast sky.

In the foreground, a wooden dugout canoe is tied to a plank dock, its paddle and a coiled rope resting inside. On the bank, a blackened kettle heats beside a round loaf and a woven basket. Further off, a half-submerged hippo, a herd of impalas at the water's edge and a crocodile on the opposite shore bring the river to life, while a fish eagle keeps watch from a tree stump on the right, and a man standing in a second canoe seems to be watching the current.

The objects often blend into the muddy, reed and wood tones around them, and some are lying down, leaning or upside down.
